Q: What is your favorite part about being an (expert!) technician?
A: My favorite part about being an expert technician is that I have the skills and knowledge required to get our customers out on the trails, or road, on the best performing/functioning bicycle possible. Interacting with riders in the bike shop makes you realize how important bicycles are to people; whether it be for fitness, transport, mental health, personal time, socializing or purely for fun and I thoroughly enjoy being a part of making this happen. I also like the comfort of knowing that I can fix my bike or my riding friends, on the remote trails or road, and get home safely. Being a female expert in the industry, I also love knowing that my shop is a welcoming and approachable environment, for professional advice and service to girls and ladies.
Q: What challenges have you faced being a woman in this field of work?
A: The challenges I have faced being a female in the industry are honestly becoming less, and I feel there really hasn't been a better time for a female to get into the cycling industry. The women's specific bikes and gear have never been better, and I'm stoked that Trek is doing such an amazing job at supporting the women's market. Being historically a male dominant industry, I have certainly had my fair share of challenges being a female, particularly at a business level dealing with suppliers and 'old school' male customers, who assume being a female you have no idea about mechanical issues, however I feel it pushes you to be that much better and more knowledgeable, so you can have the confidence to disregard that attitude. Ultimately, I thoroughly enjoy being a female in the industry, helping other females and interacting with a lot of very fun, dynamic and typically very stoked guys/gals. Whether it be group road rides, World Cup racing, local rides, solo adventures, epic multi day rides or simply commuting to work, I love that I can play a major role in making that happen to the best of my ability. :)
